Bequests

Help future generations to thrive in discovering their faith

One of the greatest contributions you can make to the mission of the Church is to leave your own lasting legacy of faith for future generations. Our Parish of St Michael’s, with our beautiful Church in the heart of Remuera, is an integral and active part of the mission of the Church.

After you have looked after your loved ones, consider making a gift to the Parish in your Will (bequest). By leaving a bequest to the Parish you leave a legacy that will benefit the Parish into the future, a powerful gift that will be greatly appreciated, allowing St Michael’s to continue to spread God’s word. Such bequests will be used with wisdom and integrity.

We invite you to let us know your intentions in advance, so that we can thank you in person.

A bequest in your Will may be:

Whole or part of your estate – you can leave your estate or any part of your estate.

Residual – a residual gift is an instruction to your Executor that, once all specific gifts are distributed to the beneficiaries named in your Will and your debts are paid, the remainder (or a proportion of the remainder) of your estate will be gifted to St Michael’s. This is a simple way to leave a gift that needn’t interfere with any other specific gifts left to loved ones.

Percentage – making a gift a percentage of your estate, or of the residual of your estate, means no matter the value of your final estate, the proportion you intended for St Michael’s will remain the same.

Specific – a specified sum of money, property or items.

How do you leave a bequest? Suggested wording for your Will

Your Will reflects who you are, what you care most about and how you want to be remembered. Including a bequest in your Will is a powerful act, simple to do, doesn’t impact on your day-to-day living and gives satisfaction knowing that your generosity lives on.

You can use the following suggested wording to describe your bequest:

“I give to the Parish of St Michael’s, Remuera, Auckland the residue of my estate (or ……………% of my residuary estate or the sum of $...............or a description of the property or asset given) for its general purposes and declare that the receipt of St Michael’s Parish Council Chair or other authorised officer shall be full and sufficient discharge for my Trustees.”

Preparing your Will doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive, but we recommend you seek the advice of a lawyer to ensure your Will is valid, and clearly sets out the way you intend your estate to be distributed. It’s important to review your Will every few years to make sure it still reflects your wishes and any change in personal circumstances.
