Sacraments

The term Sacraments refers to the sacred signs that mark stages of the Catholic faith journey.

Click on any of the names below to read about the celebration of that sacrament at St Michael's.

Adults Becoming Catholic

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

You enquire!   If you want a  preliminary glance at the Catholic faith, contact CATHOLIC ENQUIRY CENTRE info@catholicenquiry.org.nz.PO Box 6343, Marion Square, Wellington. 6141.    They will send you a free course of leaflets with no obligation.    OR

Contact St Michael's  parish, Office 520 1226, OR  stmichael.remuera@clear.net.nz OR one of the priests of the parish.   They will outline the where & how for you.

Every year towards the end of September those interested gather in a group at the Parish House  --  usually on a Thursday evening!  They will then meet every Thursday evening until Christmas and  resume again in February.  The evenings consist of a gospel study and a presentation on some aspect of Catholic teaching.

At the beginning of Lent (6 weeks before Easter), we join other enquirers from different parishes at the Cathedral and the Bishop "elects" us to go forward to initiation at Easter.   If you are still thirsting  and want to be initiated at the first Mass of Easter,  you will be baptised (if you have not already been baptised in another Christian Church), confirmed with the sacrament of Confirmation  and receive Holy Communion within the Catholic Church for the first time.

To come to the Communion table means you are fully a member of the church.   The group continues to meet for another 6 weeks to deepen one's knowledge and appreciation of BELONGING.   That sense of Belonging  will be renewed at the weekly   SUNDAY MASS.

HOW DO I BEGIN THIS JOURNEY?

You already have. Think of God as your friend and someone who loves you. Talk together each day. Share your hopes, fears and joys with this friend.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

When someone is considering the possibility of becoming a Catholic they can:

  1. Talk to a Catholic friend about it.
  2. Contact a Catholic Church - near where they live or work - and arrange to meet a priest for a chat about it.
  3. Think - and pray - some more about it.
